Struggles for Inclusion Exhibit

2019-2020
Not on view

The Tejano experience includes working to create a more just society, and among these struggles education has been a major battleground. In front of you is a classroom inspired by the Mathis Mexican Ward School, one of many segregated schools for Mexican American children that existed in Texas.

In this classroom exhibit within ITC’s Los Tejanos gallery, visitors can view a student/teacher project created in 2019-2020 called “History ReinVOKed: Student Life at Lanier High School.” Through the production of History ReinVOKed, students at Lanier combat continuing social stigma and produce a reminder of the Westside’s rich history, and reminds students of the potential that lies within.

Assisted by John Cadena, Lanier High School students Jennifer Felix and Matthew Rodriguez chose the items for the exhibit and wrote the labels.
