Leslie L. Bush delicately sliced a tiny piece of wood from an ancient dugout canoe, then studied its grain, magnified up to 400 times, under a microscope. The remnants of the boat, a rare artifact believed to have been made by Karankawa Indians, can be seen at the UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures. Bush, an independent paleoethnobotanist who does work for universities, museums and research companies, was trying to find out what it’s made of, working with the institute and a Karankawa descendants group.
