MARCH 22, 2021 — With more than 12 years of corporate-level experience in project management, George Akech joins the UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures as project manager to guide museum activities.
Akech’s background includes a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and education from the University of Nairobi, Kenya, and a bachelor’s degree in computer science from the University of Greenwich in London. He pursued graduate studies in applied statistics from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, until recruited into the workforce.
Akech arrived in San Antonio in late February and comes to the museum after corporate stints at State Farm, Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club. In his previous assignments, he focused on ensuring businesses had the means to deliver quality services and the capabilities to drive success. He often developed new and innovative processes to assure the smooth business operation.
“I believe I can share skills and experience on agile project management principles that will help us keep various museum projects on track, including the ITC reopening,” he said. “We will make sure the museum has the tools it needs to succeed.”
At ITC, Akech is working on the institute’s cleanup and reopening projects and is focused on identifying effective resources to complete tasks on time and on budget.
“I’ve worked in records management and archives environments before,” he said, “and I know the importance of preserving of valuable artifacts, images and data. Physical artifacts are no different. You must decide what to do with them to make them meaningful. You must preserve them carefully or they are gone for good.”
