This fall, San Antonio families will have the opportunity to preserve a piece of their heritage with the help of the UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures (ITC). During November, the ITC will host two cookbook workshops, inviting adults and youth to bind their favorite family recipes into their own cookbooks.
“Our food and what we serve in our homes is part of who we are – it’s our heritage,” said ITC educator Liz Lopez Gutierrez. “This is a way for a family to record a part of its story and a way to preserve knowledge passed through generations of family kitchens.”
As a component of the UTSA Libraries, the ITC frequently collaborates with library programs and serves as another outlet to make UTSA resources available to the public. For the cookbook workshops, the ITC draws on the historic Mexican Cookbook Collection to offer families an opportunity to bind their own recipes into a book.
To enhance the workshop experience, ITC educators have selected various items from the Mexican Cookbook Collection for a pop-up display at each of the workshops.
