JANUARY 22, 2021 — Robert Gonzales made a great first impression when he was introduced to the team via Zoom: An authentic HemisFair ’68 poster hung amid the artwork on his home office wall.
That kind of tribute to San Antonio’s heritage, combined with a wide array of video and graphic design skills, made him ideal for the multimedia designer position at the ITC.
A lifelong San Antonian, Gonzales graduated from UT Austin, and after a brief stint in Los Angeles, returned to town, putting his skills to work for the Museo Alameda, the Witte Museum, and in freelance projects for Blue Star and the Majestic and Empire theaters.
“This position is about broadening the way ITC pursues its mission,” he said. “My job is to expand into online and virtual space. Culture is happening right now. There’s an audience out there, primed and ready to enjoy, like and share, and we can provide them with compelling, engaging content.”
Gonzales officially started on Jan. 19, but already has delved into the community’s collective history captured in images, using publicly accessible materials, including the historic image files in the UTSA digital collections.
Robert looks forward to life post-COVID so that he can hunt the flea markets and thrift stores for more hidden treasures like his HemisFair poster. He hopes to add to his collection of ephemera that capture fragments of San Antonio’s past.
